My Regrets
Classical Animation 5:30 Minutes
A short Animated film made out of three parts about the regrets we collect as we grow up. Each part deals with a different aspect and stage of the feeling: I Wanted, I Should Have & It's Too Late.
The Concept
In Hebrew the words regret and engrave are derived from the same letters ״ח.ר.ט״. This perception was the starting point for this project and what gives it it's name ״חרטתי״, the way the regrets we collect as we grow up, become engraved in us.
Why do we regret things we did? Why do we do things we know we will regret? This stories that are engraved within us may carry this questions. The regret is formed when we tell ourselves a certain story about ourselves (The Narrating self), and yet act in a different to the point of opposite way in real life (The Experiencing self), leaving us with the gnawing feeling of regret. Normally, we regret things we have not done more strongly than things we have.
Structure
The project is divided into three chapters, based on true stories from my personal childhood, from a young age to an older one. Each chapter, presents two points of view for each story, the way I wished I had acted - the voice over, next to the visual - the real story that happened. In each story I am only the storyteller, and actually am almosr entirely absent.
Color Palette
Each chapter is colored by a different monochromatic palette that symbolizes the main emotion of the memory and the mood accompanying it. The first chapter of a bleak childhood disappointment of ones self is purple, the second of a friendship ending in the desert yellow and the third and last chapter following the last memory of its kind of a grandparent in the loving color pink.
Character Design
Our memories tend to change over time, making somethings fade in the background as others become vivid and clear. The characters in the the stories become the focus, as each story revolves around each one. The illustrations of the characters are simplistic, using similar shapes to create different personalities for each character.
Animation Process
The animation was created frame by frame, lined sketches, colors and then shadowing.
Background Design
As with the character design, the backgrounds of each story are purposefully created as line art, creating a visual contrast next to the protagonist, displaying the fickle ways of memory. The main focus is what the main character of each story is going through, yet all else turning to nothing but the backgrounds of the happenings.
Storyboards
Some of the first rough drafts. *The reading direction of these is from right to left because the project was made in Hebrew.
